Frequently Asked Questions
A forest preschool is a nature-based program where the natural world is the primary learning environment. Children spend time outdoors exploring, playing, and learning through hands-on experiences in all seasons. Our indoor space is also connected to nature, with natural materials, open-ended play, and activities that reflect what children are discovering outside.
Safety is a top priority at Forest Path Preschool. Educators conduct daily assessments of our indoor and outdoor environments for safety concerns, establish clear boundaries, and support children in developing the skills they need to make safe choices. Staff are trained in emergency procedures and children are supervised at all times.
Research in early childhood education shows that children benefit from age-appropriate risk, such as climbing, balancing, using tools with supervision, and exploring uneven terrain. These experiences help build confidence, problem-solving skills, physical coordination, emotional regulation, and the ability to assess and manage risk safely.
Outdoor time is a regular part of our day. We believe children benefit from experiencing nature in different seasons and weather conditions, while balancing outdoor exploration with access to indoor spaces when needed.
Children should arrive dressed for the weather in comfortable, mess-friendly clothing such as waterproof outerwear, boots, hats (bucket or sun hats, not baseball caps), and extra changes of clothes. We also maintain a lending library of outdoor gear so no child is left without appropriate clothing.
We focus on building relationships, emotional awareness, communication skills, and problem-solving through play, collaborative experiences, and responsive guidance from educators.
Yes! We value strong partnerships with families. Families can get involved in many ways, including reading a story, sharing a hobby, skill, or career, helping care for our garden and outdoor spaces, assisting with special events, joining nature walks, donating materials, or serving on committees and fundraising initiatives. Have an idea of your own? We'd love to hear it!
